A flock of rare birds called black-crowned night herons has recently arrived at a nature reserve in North Yorkshire. These birds are not common in the UK, but the recent heatwaves in Europe have forced them to leave their usual homes and look for new places to live. The Bolton-on-Swale Nature Reserve is now home to one of the largest groups of these birds in the country. Another black-crowned night heron has also been spotted at the North Cave Wetlands near Hull for the third year in a row.
Jonathan Leadley from the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust explained that more of these birds are coming north every year because they are losing their habitats in southern Europe. He said that while it is exciting for bird watchers to see these rare birds, it is also a worrying sign. The reason the birds are moving is because climate change is making their old homes too hot and dry. Wetlands in places like southern Spain and northern Italy are drying up, which means the birds cannot find enough food or safe places to breed.
Black-crowned night herons are smaller than the more common grey herons. They are most active at night, sleeping during the day and waking up at dusk to hunt for food. The Yorkshire Wildlife Trust says that the flock of six birds moved to Bolton-on-Swale because the heat and dry weather in Europe made it hard for them to survive. Jonathan Leadley said that if the birds lose their habitats, they will not be able to feed or breed successfully. He also mentioned that the number of these birds in Yorkshire is increasing each year, and it looks like they might start living there permanently. Normally, black-crowned night herons breed in continental Europe and spend the winter in Africa. Even though their arrival is a sign of climate change, many bird watchers in Yorkshire are excited to see them. People are traveling from all over the area to catch a glimpse of these rare birds. Jonathan said the best times to see them are early in the morning or late in the evening, but you might also spot them during the day if you look carefully in the willow trees.
