When you look up and see white streaks behind airplanes, you are seeing contrails. Contrails, or condensation trails, are formed when the hot exhaust from a plane's engines meets the cold air high in the sky, turning into ice crystals. Sometimes these contrails disappear quickly, but in cold and humid conditions, they can last a long time and spread out, forming clouds. These clouds can trap heat in the Earth's atmosphere, which adds to global warming and climate change. Scientists believe that contrails are responsible for about a third of the warming caused by airplanes.
To help solve this problem, a new project in the UK called Operation Blue Skies is starting. The project will use artificial intelligence, or AI, to predict where contrails are likely to form. The goal is to help pilots avoid those areas and reduce the number of warming clouds. The project is a partnership between Google, the UK government, the Met Office, National Air Traffic Services, and researchers from the University of Cambridge and Imperial College London. They will focus on the Shanwick Oceanic airspace, which is a busy part of the North Atlantic where many planes fly. This area is important because it is responsible for about 5% of all contrail warming in the world.
The AI will use satellite images and flight data to find out where contrails have formed in the past. It will also use weather patterns to predict where new contrails might appear. This information will be sent to air traffic controllers, who can then tell pilots to change their altitude by about 2,000 feet to avoid making contrails. This kind of altitude change is common for pilots, who often adjust their height to avoid turbulence or bad weather, so passengers probably won't notice anything different.
The tests will take place during the winters of 2026-27 and 2027-28, when there are fewer flights. About 10,000 flights will pass through the test area, but only a small number will need to change altitude to avoid contrails. The UK Department for Transport is providing most of the funding, with Google contributing through AI research and technology.
Some people are concerned that changing a plane's altitude could make it use more fuel, which would create more carbon emissions. However, the scientists say that the extra fuel used is much less than the benefit of preventing contrails. In earlier tests, airlines were able to reduce contrail formation by 60-70%. The results of Operation Blue Skies will be published for other scientists to review. If successful, this project could help make flying more environmentally friendly and reduce the impact of aviation on climate change.
