Indonesia is facing a serious wildfire crisis, especially on the island of Borneo, where thousands of volunteers are risking their health to fight massive fires. The air in Borneo is thick with yellowish smoke, making it hard to see and breathe. This smoke has traveled far, affecting people in other countries like Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines. Many people are getting sick from the polluted air, with hospitals seeing a big increase in patients suffering from breathing problems. The fires have burned about 200,000 hectares of forest and farmland since July, and the situation is getting worse because of a strong El Niño weather pattern that has made the land very dry.

What makes these fires especially dangerous is that they are burning in peatlands. Peatlands are wet, swampy areas filled with old plant material that has stored carbon for thousands of years. When peatlands catch fire, they release huge amounts of carbon dioxide and other gases into the air, which is very bad for the environment. Scientists call these fires 'carbon bombs' because of how much pollution they create. The fires burn not only on the surface but also deep underground, making them very hard to put out. Volunteers use hand tools, water pumps, and even dig ponds to try to stop the fires, but the smoke and heat make their job extremely difficult.

Most of the volunteers are from local communities, such as the Dayak and Banjar people, who have a long history of living in harmony with the forest. However, in the past, these communities have sometimes been blamed for starting fires because of their traditional farming methods, even though large companies are often responsible for draining the peatlands to create plantations. This draining makes the land much more likely to catch fire. The volunteers are exhausted and worried about their health, but they continue to fight the fires because they feel it is their duty to protect their land and people. They hope for rain to help them, but until then, they will keep working to stop the fires and reduce the dangerous haze that is affecting so many lives.
