Jenny Lind, known as the 'Swedish Nightingale,' was one of the most famous opera singers of the 19th century. Between 1847 and 1862, Jenny Lind visited Norwich four times, and each visit was met with excitement and admiration. People in Norwich were so eager to see her perform that the city experienced what was called 'Jenny-mania. ' In 1849, she held several concerts in Norwich, and the money she raised was used to create the Jenny Lind Infirmary for Sick Children. This hospital opened in 1854 and was only the second children's hospital in the country, after Great Ormond Street Hospital in London.

Jenny Lind's background was not wealthy. She grew up in Sweden and worked hard to become a star. Her rise from a poor background to international fame inspired many people. In Norwich, she became especially popular because of her charitable work. When she was delayed by illness before one of her visits, she felt bad for the people who were waiting to see her. To make up for it, she added a third concert and lowered the ticket prices so that even poor families could attend. The money from her concerts, which would be worth about £140,000 today, was donated to help build the children's hospital. The hospital moved locations several times over the years, but it always kept Jenny Lind's name. Today, the children's department at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital still honors her legacy.

During her 1849 visit, Jenny Lind stayed with Bishop Edward Stanley. The room where she slept is still part of Norwich School. Her arrival in the city was celebrated with church bells and even a gun salute. Some people thought it was unusual for an opera singer to stay with a bishop, but Jenny Lind became close friends with the bishop's family. After the bishop died, his wife continued to support Jenny. In 2017, Jenny Lind's story was brought to a new generation through the film 'The Greatest Showman,' where she was played by Rebecca Ferguson. The movie made her story famous again, but some say the real events of her life are even more inspiring. Jenny Lind gave over 130 concerts in America and Canada, and she often donated her earnings to charity. Her family has continued to visit Norwich, and her story remains an example of how talent and kindness can make a lasting difference.
