Furiosa, the latest installment in the Mad Max series, fell short of expectations during its opening weekend in the US. Despite projections of a $40 million opening, the movie only managed to bring in $32 million over the long Memorial Day weekend. This disappointing performance marks the lowest box office figures for the holiday weekend in 30 years, since Casper debuted to $22. 5 million in 1995. Furiosa narrowly beat its closest competitor, The Garfield Movie, which made $31. 1 million. The figures for the 2024 weekend were significantly down from 2023, when Disney's The Little Mermaid brought in $118 million. The movie, a prequel to the Mad Max series, stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth and tells the origin story of Imperator Furiosa, played by Charlize Theron in 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road. The dystopian action films, created by George Miller, are set in the barren Australian outback, exploring the breakdown of society after an apocalypse. The film, which cost $168 million to produce, was projected to make around $40 million over the four-day weekend in the US.
