A massive whale graveyard has been discovered deep in the southeastern Indian Ocean, stretching for about 1,200 kilometers. This graveyard lies in the Diamantina fracture zone, a region on the ocean floor filled with ridges and trenches. What makes this discovery so remarkable is not just its size, but also its age. Some of the whale remains found here are as old as 5. 3 million years, which has caused a lot of excitement among scientists. The site is about seven kilometers below the surface, making it one of the deepest and oldest whale graveyards ever found.
The discovery was made by a group of researchers from China, Italy, and New Zealand. Over the course of 32 dives, the team collected samples from 485 different sites where whale fossils and recent whale falls were found. Among the many remains, they found the skeleton of an extinct whale species called Pterocetus benguelae, which lived more than five million years ago. The largest find was the carcass of an Antarctic minke whale that measured five meters in length. The team also discovered a new species, which they named Pterocetus diamantinae, after the location of the graveyard.
The whale graveyard is not just a place of ancient bones. It is also full of life. Many different creatures, such as jellyfish, worms, and crustaceans, live on and around the whale remains. Some of these animals may be new to science. One of the researchers, Xiaotong Peng from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that the size, depth, and age of the graveyard were far beyond what they had imagined. Another scientist, Stephen J Godfrey from the Calvert Marine Museum, compared the discovery to the beginning of an epic movie series, saying he hopes there will be many more exciting finds in the future. Although the site is difficult to reach, scientists believe it holds many more secrets waiting to be uncovered.
