A new art exhibition in Bishop Auckland is inviting the public to help solve a mystery. The Mining Art Gallery is displaying a charcoal portrait of an elderly man, drawn in the 1960s by Tom McGuinness, a miner who became a well-known artist. The man in the portrait is wearing a flat cap and a coat with a notched lapel, and he is gazing thoughtfully into the distance. The gallery does not know who this man is, but they believe he was probably someone Tom McGuinness knew personally or a local resident who asked to have his portrait drawn. The exhibition is part of a celebration of Tom McGuinness’s life and work, marking 100 years since his birth in County Durham.
Anne Sutherland, the curator for mining art and industrial heritage at The Auckland Project, said they are hoping someone will recognize the man. She explained that Tom McGuinness was very talented at capturing the character and personality of the people he painted, and this portrait is a great example of his skill. When the gallery first put the drawing on display, they thought it was of Tom’s father-in-law and called it 'Cathy’s Dad. ' However, Tom’s daughter, Corinne Aspel, quickly realized it was not her grandfather. She pointed out that the man’s nose was a different shape, so the gallery changed the title to 'Portrait of an Unknown Man. ' Now, they are asking for help from the public to finally put a name to the face.
The exhibition, called 'Tom McGuinness: Out of the Darkness,' will run for the rest of the year. It features a variety of Tom’s works, including oil paintings, sketches, lithographs, and personal family portraits. Tom McGuinness was born in 1926 and was one of the Bevin Boys, a group of young men who were sent to work in coal mines during World War Two. He continued to paint throughout his life, focusing on the lives and struggles of miners and their families. He passed away in 2006 at the age of 80. Anne Sutherland said the exhibition is a tribute to Tom’s ability to show the emotional reality of mining life and the strength of mining communities in the North East. The gallery hopes that visitors will enjoy the art and maybe help solve the mystery of the unknown man. The exhibition also includes other interesting works, such as photographs of miners, paintings of families, and sketches of everyday life, all showing the rich history and culture of the area.
