A new exhibition in Colchester is shining a light on the famous British artist John Constable and his connections to Essex. The show, called 'John Constable: Celebrating 250 Years,' is being held at The Minories gallery and brings together a variety of Constable's works that are linked to the local area. Constable is well known for his love of nature and his habit of making quick sketches outdoors, especially of mills, rivers, and trees. He was born in East Bergholt, Suffolk, and spent a lot of time in north Essex and the Stour Valley, which inspired many of his most famous landscape paintings.
According to the exhibition organizers, Colchester has a strong connection to Constable. Darius Laws, who is in charge of culture, heritage, and the environment for the city council, said that this exhibition is a fantastic opportunity for both residents and visitors to explore Constable's ties to the area and to see a different side of one of Britain's greatest landscape painters. Constable often visited his second cousin, Jane Anne Mason, who lived in Colchester. He made several sketches of the city's famous Roman walls during his visits. Jane Anne Mason became the godmother to Constable's youngest child, Lionel, in 1828. Her daughter, Jane Anne Inglis, was interested in art, and Constable supported her by giving her advice and letting her see his art collection.
One of the highlights of the exhibition is an 1808 pencil drawing by Constable of St Botolph's Priory, which was added to the Colchester Museums' collection two years ago. Constable was known for making many open-air sketches, which he later used as the basis for his larger paintings that he exhibited. Although his paintings are extremely popular today, they were not always well received during his lifetime. The Minories gallery has a small but important selection of his works. Emma Howe, the gallery's director, said they are delighted to mark this milestone anniversary with an exhibition that highlights Constable's strong local connections and partnerships. The exhibition is free to attend. In addition, Christchurch Mansion in Ipswich is also celebrating Constable this year. One of the most exciting parts of the exhibitions is the loan of Constable's famous painting, 'The Hay Wain,' which will be shown in the county it depicts for the first time. This painting shows a peaceful scene in Flatford, near Dedham, with a horse and cart in the River Stour and Willy Lott's cottage on the bank.
