The Wolds Inn in Huggate is one business that has benefited from Hockney’s fame. The pub’s owner, Vicky Knocker, says that many of her guests are walkers and cyclists who come to explore the Wolds Way and the Way of the Roses. Some guests mention Hockney and say that the views remind them of his paintings. There’s even a local story that Hockney had his first drink at the pub when he was a young farm worker. The countryside around Huggate is peaceful and unspoiled, with grassy valleys and sheep. While some people want more visitors, others worry that too many tourists could spoil the quiet charm of the area. Still, Hockney’s art has helped put Huggate and the Wolds on the map, and more people are discovering the beauty of East Yorkshire.
