While King believes that Fyre II could potentially be a 'huge success,' he is skeptical about McFarland's ability to lead the project effectively. King has yet to see any of the $1 million he invested in the original festival and was contacted by McFarland to meet with potential investors for the new event. King reminisced about their initial plans to host a lavish party at one of the largest estates in the Hamptons, only to end up with a small gathering of 30 people at a pizza restaurant along the Montauk highway. He mentioned that subsequent calls with McFarland were canceled, and he has not heard from him in seven or eight months. The original Fyre Festival was heavily promoted by supermodels and celebrities as an exclusive getaway for the wealthy, with the location touted as a private island once owned by notorious drug lord Pablo Escobar. However, festival-goers arrived to find that all the entertainment had been canceled, accommodations consisted of bare mattresses in tents, and the food was limited to cheese sandwiches served in takeaway containers. McFarland was sentenced to six years in prison for wire fraud in 2018 and was ordered to repay $29 million to investors. He was released in 2022 under an early release program but remains on probation until next August. According to McFarland, tickets for Fyre II will start at $1,400 and can go as high as $1. 1 million. The most expensive package will include activities such as scuba diving, island hopping, and luxury yacht experiences. He mentioned that the event will not solely focus on music and may feature additional attractions like a live karate combat pit. However, he admitted that he has yet to secure any performers for the event. In the documentary, he recounts how McFarland pressured him to offer sexual favors to Bahamian customs officials to secure bottled water for the festival. This 'funny fame' has come at a significant cost for King. He revealed that he maintained contact with McFarland throughout his prison sentence and briefly advised him on reputation management last year.
