Artificial intelligence is being utilized to assist in the search for a partner for the 'world's loneliest plant' in the Ngoye Forest. The University of Southampton is leading a research project to find a female partner for the endangered male plant, E. woodii. This ancient species, which predates the dinosaurs, is unable to naturally reproduce as all existing members are male clones. Dr. Laura Cinti, a research fellow at the University of Southampton, is leading the project and is using drones and AI to locate a female E. woodii. The species was discovered in the Ngoye Forest in 1895, and all subsequent propagated samples are male clones. The AI is being used to analyze drone footage of the 10,000-acre forest area, with less than 2% of the area covered so far. Dr. Cinti and her team are training the AI model to recognize plants by shape in different ecological settings.
