A group of scientists from King's College London has made history by becoming the first academic team in the UK to use Google's advanced quantum computer chip, called Willow. This opportunity came as part of a program started with the UK's national quantum lab last year. Quantum computers are very different from the regular computers we use every day. They use the science of quantum mechanics, which studies how tiny particles behave. Because of this, quantum computers can solve certain problems much faster than even the most powerful supercomputers. For example, Google claims that Willow can solve a problem in just five minutes that would take the fastest supercomputer in the world 10 septillion years to finish. That's a number with 25 zeros!
Dr Eleanor Crane, who leads the project at King's College, said that using Willow will help scientists answer some of the most important questions about how nature works. She explained that understanding how plants turn sunlight into energy, finding materials that can carry electricity better, or learning how molecules stick together are all examples of problems that are very hard for today's computers to solve. If scientists can figure out these processes, it could lead to better solar panels, more efficient energy systems, and even new medicines for diseases that are currently untreatable. Dr Crane and her team, along with Dr Alexander Schuckert from ENS Paris, will use Willow to develop new techniques that will help quantum computers model natural systems like photosynthesis.
Google says that Willow includes important breakthroughs and is a step toward building a large, useful quantum computer. Dr Crane pointed out that there have been big developments in quantum computing in the UK, Europe, the US, China, and other places. Quantum computers are being built and are getting closer to being able to do useful things for society. The King's College team will use Willow to try to answer questions about natural processes that are too complex for regular computers. Google's Quantum AI team and the UK's National Quantum Computing Centre chose King's College because they had a strong research proposal. Other universities, like Cambridge, are also working with companies to build powerful quantum computers. Quantum computers will not replace regular computers, since there are many things they are not good at. But if they live up to their promise, they could help solve problems that are impossible for today's computers. Some experts believe that by 2028 or 2030, quantum computers might already be solving very useful problems. However, there are also concerns. For example, quantum computers might be able to break the codes that protect our private messages and online money. Some companies are already working to make their systems safer for the future. Quantum computers are still new, but many people are excited to see what they can do and how they might change the world.
