Nicola Ellis is a 34-year-old artist and art teacher from Manchester who creates sculptures using waste materials from factories. She works as an artist-in-residence at Ritherdon & Co, one of Lancashire's oldest manufacturing companies. Nicola spends one or two days each week at the factory, collecting leftover materials like plaster and metal that would otherwise be thrown away. She believes that what some people see as waste can actually be turned into something valuable and beautiful. Nicola has a lot of respect for the factory workers, such as fabricators and machine operators, who have spent years learning their craft. She wants to show that manufacturing is still alive and important in her area.

Nicola's exhibition, called 'Exercises in Knowing,' is currently on display at the HOME arts centre in Manchester until 17 May. Her sculptures often show workers doing their everyday tasks, like a man putting on ear defenders. Nicola says the workers are great people and fun to be around. She wants to bring a bit of the factory atmosphere into the gallery so that visitors can experience what it is like, even if they have never been inside a factory. The exhibition also includes videos filmed from nine different angles around the welding booth at Ritherdon, as well as large artworks hanging throughout the space.

Matthew Bradley, who works with electrical wiring at the factory, is glad that the exhibition shows what happens behind the factory walls. He hopes that people will continue to work in manufacturing instead of relying only on robots, like in some other countries. Matthew believes that when people make things by hand, each item is unique because of the small differences in how each person works. Nicola's art helps people appreciate the skills and hard work of factory workers. The exhibition also features other artists, like Claire Ward, who made a long string of plastic milk bottles cut into ribbons, and a toy gun with colorful plastic flowers. These artworks show how waste can be transformed into creative pieces, encouraging people to think differently about the things they throw away.
