Lea Salonga is a well-known singer and actress from the Philippines, often called a national treasure in her home country. Lea's talent and hard work eventually helped her break more barriers. She became the singing voice for two Disney princesses: Princess Jasmine in Aladdin and Mulan. These roles made her even more popular, especially among children. But her journey was not easy. When she was offered the role of Eponine in Les Misérables, she did not have to audition because the producers of Miss Saigon also worked on Les Misérables. They invited her to join the cast, making her the first Asian actress to play a main role in the famous musical. Lea said it was very stressful because she was the only person of color in the cast. She wondered if people thought her casting was just a stunt or an experiment. Still, she knew that if she could play Eponine, it meant that other people from different backgrounds could also have a chance.

Today, things are changing on Broadway and in the entertainment world. More Asian actors are getting important roles, and Asian-led musicals are finding success. Lea is currently performing in Singapore with Nathania Ong, another Asian actress playing Eponine. Nathania says she grew up watching Lea and is proud to follow her example. However, she also points out that there are still challenges. Sometimes, Asian actors wonder if they are chosen just to meet a diversity quota or because of their talent. Lea believes that the situation is improving. She is excited to see more Asian stories and actors on stage and in movies. She is working on a new animated film based on Philippine folklore. Lea says that when she was young, she did not see many Asian role models in the industry. Now, she is happy that young people can see someone like them on stage. She hopes that the next generation will continue to work hard and believe in themselves, no matter their background. Lea also admires groups like BTS, who have become global stars and inspire many Asians around the world. She feels proud to be part of this movement and wants to encourage others to keep pushing forward.
