The winners of the Gen Z art competition have been revealed at the opening of a new exhibition in Bradford. The Z Open, organized by Bradford District Museums and Galleries, invited young artists aged 16 to 25 who live, work, or study in Bradford to submit their creative works. The competition aimed to showcase the talent and imagination of the city's younger generation, and the winning entries are now on display at the Bradford Industrial Museum until 8 March.
The three winners were selected by a panel of judges for their exceptional quality and thought-provoking themes. Juna Tu, aged 16, won the 16 to 18 years category with her acrylic painting called Faces of Light. The judges praised her for her amazing use of light and the way she depicted four faces in shadow. Van Garon, aged 20, took the prize in the 19 to 21 age group with a collection of works, including an animation called Colt, a stop-motion figure named Soloman Vanguard, and a poster design titled The Revenant Program. His work was described as clanky and comical, showing a unique style and creativity. Haleema Aziz, aged 25, won the 22 to 25 category with a series of paintings that were noted for their mystery and atmosphere.
Judge Atiyya Mirza commented that the three winners exhibited exceptional quality and interesting conceptual themes, echoing skill and talent with imaginative visualisation. Ruth Fettis, a local printmaker and judge, highlighted the impressive use of light in Juna Tu's painting. A spokesperson from Bradford Council said that as the district's year as UK City of Culture comes to an end, it is clear that the future of art produced by young people in Bradford is bright.
The exhibition at Bradford Industrial Museum is open to the public, giving everyone a chance to see the winning artworks and celebrate the creativity of Bradford's young artists. The competition has provided a platform for these artists to share their ideas and inspire others. The judges hope that the winners and all participants will continue to develop their artistic skills and contribute to the vibrant art scene in Bradford.
