While the committee did not recommend immediate action, they did express the need for the government to consider this issue seriously. Uber has become a major player in the global ride-hailing market, and its success has often been linked to its use of technology. However, this has meant that customers have primarily needed to use cashless payment methods to access its services. The company’s spokesperson stated, 'We believe that movement should be accessible to everyone,' emphasizing the importance of providing options for all passengers. With the new cash payment option, passengers can select cash as their preferred payment method on the Uber app. If drivers do not have enough change, Uber will provide credit to the passengers. It is also worth mentioning that the cash payment option is not available for Uber Eats or for booking other forms of transport through the app. The discussion around cash payments is becoming increasingly relevant, especially for certain groups of people. Ron Delnevo, a cash campaigner from the Payment Choice Alliance, stated that Uber's decision shows a belief in the future of cash in the UK. He has called on the government to introduce laws that would require all shops and services to accept cash. Although ministers have indicated that there are no current plans to implement such rules, the Treasury Committee's report highlighted various groups who depend on cash, including individuals with learning disabilities and those who use cash to manage their budgets.
