ByteDance, a major technology company from China, is facing serious complaints from Disney and other entertainment companies over its AI-powered video app called Seedance. However, Disney is not pleased with how its characters are being used. Disney's lawyers described ByteDance's actions as a "virtual smash-and-grab" of their intellectual property. They believe that Seedance is allowing users to make videos with Disney's characters without permission, which is against copyright laws.

In response, ByteDance told the BBC that they respect intellectual property rights and are aware of the concerns about Seedance 2. 0. The company said it is taking steps to improve its safeguards and prevent users from making unauthorized videos with copyrighted characters. ByteDance did not give details about what changes they will make, but they said they are serious about protecting copyrights. They also mentioned that they had already stopped users from uploading images of real people to the app.

Other companies in Hollywood are also upset. Paramount Skydance reportedly sent ByteDance a similar letter, demanding that Seedance stop using its content. The Motion Picture Association, which represents big studios like Warner Bros Discovery, Paramount, and Netflix, has also asked ByteDance to stop the "infringing activity" immediately. The actors' union Sag-Aftra accused Seedance of "blatant infringement" as well.

The issue has even reached Japan, where the government is investigating ByteDance after AI-generated videos of popular Japanese anime characters appeared online. This is not the first time AI tools have faced legal trouble for using copyrighted material. Last year, Disney and NBCUniversal sued another AI platform for making unauthorized copies of their work. Disney has also asked Google to limit the use of its characters on Google's AI platforms.

The rise of AI video and image generators like Seedance is creating new challenges for copyright laws. Entertainment companies want to protect their characters and stories, while technology companies are trying to develop new tools. ByteDance says it will work to prevent copyright violations, but it remains to be seen how they will solve these problems and keep both users and copyright holders happy.
