Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia, has announced that the UK is on track to become an 'AI superpower' as major technology companies pledge billions of pounds in investment. The largest single investment comes from Microsoft, which is committing £22 billion, marking its biggest spending outside the United States. This is part of a £31 billion 'Tech Prosperity Deal' between the UK government and several US tech giants, coinciding with President Donald Trump's state visit to the UK. Huang told BBC News that while the UK has the talent and research facilities needed for AI, it lacks the necessary infrastructure. He said, 'We are here to build it,' referring to the data centres and computer chips that power AI systems. Nvidia is partnering with British infrastructure company Nscale to construct more data centres, and Huang hopes to establish a major AI infrastructure company in the UK that could expand globally.

Microsoft's CEO Satya Nadella believes that AI investment will boost UK growth and productivity, possibly within five years rather than ten. He wants to see AI's impact reflected in economic growth and GDP. The deal also involves Google, Nvidia, and other companies investing in British infrastructure, including new data centres and a supercomputer in Essex. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said the agreement would create highly skilled jobs and benefit people across the UK. Nadella compared the economic impact of AI to the rise of personal computers in the 1990s, which transformed workplaces and productivity.

Despite the excitement, some experts warn that AI could be a bubble that might burst. Nadella acknowledged that technology often goes through cycles of booms and busts, and cautioned against over-hyping or underestimating AI. He admitted that AI's energy consumption is very high but argued that its benefits in healthcare, public services, and business productivity make it worthwhile. Huang said that solar power will help meet AI's energy needs, and he hopes to use more gas turbines in the short term. He believes AI will help design better energy solutions, such as improved gas turbines, solar panels, and wind turbines. However, campaigners like Foxglove worry that the UK could end up paying for the huge energy demands of tech giants.

The new supercomputer in Essex was announced by the government in January, and Microsoft has now joined the project. The Tech Prosperity Deal aims to strengthen UK-US ties in AI, quantum computing, and nuclear power. Some have questioned what the UK is offering in return. Technology Secretary Liz Kendall said the deal does not include promises to scrap the Digital Services Tax or change copyright rules for AI companies. Other tech firms, including Google, have pledged billions for AI research and infrastructure in the UK. Tech leaders such as Nadella, Huang, and OpenAI's Sam Altman will attend a Royal Family-hosted event at Windsor Castle.

The government also announced that north-east England has been designated as an 'AI growth zone,' with the potential for over 5,000 jobs and billions in private investment. A new data centre project called Stargate UK will be built in Northumberland, involving OpenAI, Nvidia, Nscale, and Arm. The UK project is smaller than OpenAI's US-based Stargate initiative, which plans to invest $500 billion over four years. The Tony Blair Institute called the news a 'breakthrough moment' but said the UK needs to reform planning rules, speed up clean energy projects, and build better digital infrastructure. The Conservative Party pointed out that some international companies, like Merck, have recently delayed or cancelled their UK expansion plans.
