After being closed to the public for more than 80 years, a historic gallery at London’s Natural History Museum is set to reopen next month. The gallery, which was last open in 1943 during World War Two, will welcome visitors again starting September 16. This reopening is part of a larger project called NHM150, which aims to transform the museum by introducing new or updated exhibits every year until its 150th anniversary in 2031. The new exhibition in the gallery is called 'Nature and Us' and will feature 50 objects that explore how humans and the natural world have changed together over time.

Dr Doug Gurr, the director of the museum, said that this is the first time in over 80 years that people will be able to visit this beautiful and historic space. The gallery is located on the second floor of the museum’s main Waterhouse Building. Originally, it was used to display animal skeletons and mammals, but after the museum’s plant collection room was damaged during World War Two, the gallery was closed to the public and used to store plants instead. Now, the museum is inviting visitors to help shape the future of the gallery. For the first 18 months, the exhibition will be 'experimental,' and visitors can share their opinions about what they would like to see in the permanent gallery, which is planned to open in 2029.

Some of the highlights of the new exhibition include a miniature model of a Crystal Palace dinosaur, which shows how early scientists and artists imagined prehistoric animals. There is also a Victorian-era skeleton of a monk seal named Jenny, which tells the story of how wild animals were once used for entertainment. Another fascinating object is the jawbone of one of Britain’s earliest known domesticated dogs, dating back about 14,300 years. The Natural History Museum in South Kensington is free to visit and is open every day. The reopening of this gallery gives people a chance to learn more about the history of science, the natural world, and how our relationship with nature has changed over the years.
