Nadia Pinkney, an art and fashion teacher at St David's High School in Dalkeith, has experienced an incredible surprise. Her graduate fashion collection, inspired by Alzheimer's disease, has been chosen to feature in a major exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Nadia created her collection, called 'Remember Me Knot,' while studying at Heriot Watt University in 2016. The collection was inspired by her great-grandmother and grandmother, who both suffered from Alzheimer's. Nadia wanted to understand the disease better and express her feelings through her designs. She worked with doctors and researchers, using brain scans to create unique prints for her clothing. The designs include lots of knots and tangled materials, representing how Alzheimer's tangles the neurons in the brain. The only color she used was red, which was her great granny's favorite color and also represents the active parts of the brain in medical scans.

After leaving the fashion industry in 2021, Nadia became a full-time teacher. She stored her collection in a box in her classroom, almost forgetting about it. When her grandfather passed away, she had to clear out many things and nearly got rid of the collection. Luckily, she kept the most important pieces. Earlier this year, she even remade one of the outfits from scratch because it had not survived. Nadia was shocked when she received a message from the Met Gala curators, led by Andrew Bolton, asking to include her work in their new exhibition, Costume Art. At first, she thought the message was a scam, but it turned out to be real. The curators were searching for fashion inspired by the aging body and cognitive disorders, and they found Nadia's work online.

The Costume Art exhibition will open to the public on May 10 and will display 400 outfits and objects from the past 5,000 years. Nadia's collection will be shown alongside a lithograph by Dutch-American artist Willem de Kooning, whose own art was influenced by his experience with Alzheimer's. Nadia and her mother are traveling to New York for the opening event. The invitation said 'festive attire,' so Nadia asked ChatGPT for advice on what to wear. She chose a black trouser suit with silver details, while her mother will wear a red suit. Nadia is still amazed that her work is being recognized at such a high level. She hopes her story will inspire her students and others to follow their passions and use art to share important messages. Nadia is proud to honor her family's experience with Alzheimer's and help raise awareness about the disease through her fashion.
