Australians may soon have the power to switch off social media algorithms, according to new legislation being proposed by the government. Communications Minister Anika Wells announced that the draft law would require major tech companies like Meta, Google, and TikTok to give users the option to turn off algorithms that decide what content appears in their feeds. If these companies fail to provide this choice, they could face significant penalties. Wells explained that the goal is to give Australians more control over their online experience and to introduce basic safety protections in an industry that has not been closely regulated before.

The proposal has sparked debate among politicians. Some members of the opposition, including Liberal Party leader Angus Taylor, have criticized the plan, suggesting it could lead to censorship and limit freedom of speech. Taylor expressed skepticism, saying the government should focus on enforcing existing social media bans, especially those aimed at protecting children under 16. However, Wells insists that the legislation is not about censorship but about making tech companies identify and reduce risks on their platforms. She believes that while many Australians enjoy the benefits of algorithms, such as discovering new businesses or content, everyone should have the right to choose whether or not to use them.

The draft law is also expected to address other online harms, such as the spread of illegal content and videos that promote unhealthy behaviors. Last week, consent advocate Chanel Contos spoke at the National Press Club, urging the government to make algorithmic feeds opt-in, which would make it harder for tech companies to avoid following the rules. She argued that algorithms can expose young people to harmful material, including misogynistic content. The government is still working out the details of how the law will function and is seeking expert advice on whether users should have to opt in or out of algorithm-driven feeds. The legislation is expected to be introduced soon, potentially giving Australians more say over what they see on social media and holding tech companies to higher safety standards.
