The museum, which first opened its doors in 1923, has received 'designated status' for its outstanding Jurassic Coast geology collection. This collection is one of the museum's oldest and most important exhibits, featuring some of the earliest dinosaur fossils ever described, including a juvenile Scelidosaurus. The museum also displays a wide variety of Jurassic-era fossils, such as ammonites, fossil fish, and large marine reptiles like Ichthyosaurs. These fossils are displayed in well-lit rooms with glass cabinets, and there are illustrations on the walls showing what these ancient creatures might have looked like.

The director of the museum, Bridget Houseago, expressed her excitement about the award. She said, 'Lyme is widely considered the birthplace of palaeontology and I am delighted that our exceptional collection has been recognised by the Arts Council England. ' Lyme Regis is famous for its connection to the history of fossil hunting, especially because it was the hometown of Mary Anning, a well-known fossil hunter from the 19th century. The town has long been a center for paleontology, attracting scientists and fossil enthusiasts from all over the world. Houseago also mentioned that the museum's fossils are rare, beautiful, and scientifically important, offering a remarkable insight into life on Earth millions of years ago.

Arts Council England has given designated status to more than 160 collections across the country, recognizing their importance in areas like art, literature, and science. Darren Henley, the Chief Executive of Arts Council England, congratulated the museum, saying, 'The Jurassic Coast Collection celebrates the birthplace of palaeontology and Britain's ancient life.
