Kieran also met Lottie Wahkinney, a Comanche girl from Oklahoma with Scottish grandparents. Her father said Lottie has a mix of cultures, and her Scottish relatives visit every summer.

Most Native Americans Kieran met could trace their ginger hair to European ancestors, but Lakia, a Cherokee girl, was different. Her family had no known European roots, and her hair is a unique deep ruby red. People often think she dyes it, but it is natural. Kieran also visited Alabama, a state with a history of civil rights struggles and space exploration. He met Rachel Releford, who has a daughter with curly red hair. Sometimes people assume Rachel is the nanny, but she proudly says her daughter is hers. Kieran also met Henry Davis and his son, both with ginger hair, though the older Henry's hair has turned gray.

Kieran met families like the Smiths from Virginia, where several children have red hair. He knows that ginger hair can sometimes be used as an insult, but he prefers to use the word 'ginger' because it describes the golden tone of the hair. He believes ginger hair is a 'golden thread' that connects people across America's diverse history. He met Cali Trawick, a boy with Irish, African-American, indigenous American, and Hispanic roots, whose family story shows how different backgrounds come together. In Scotland, about 13% of people have red hair, but Kieran estimates that in America, about 4% of people carry the gene. If all the gingers in America lived in one city, it would be huge and bright.

Evelyn Lee from Alabama used to dislike her ginger curls but now loves them, comparing them to princesses in paintings. Kieran noticed that Americans often think about their ancestry, including Native Americans who have moved from different parts of the country. His book is a journey across America, learning about the country through the unique trait of ginger hair. He says America is full of amazing people and communities, and after meeting so many, he feels proud of the country. Kieran believes that ginger hair shows how everyone is connected, and his project highlights the beauty and diversity of America.
