Colombia is quickly becoming known for its growing technology industry, especially in cities like Bogota and Medellín. One of the most visible signs of this change is the delivery company Rappi. If you walk around Bogota, you will see many Rappi delivery drivers on bikes with bright orange bags that have a moustache logo. Rappi is now Colombia’s most successful tech start-up. It is valued at over five billion dollars and has more than 35 million active users every month. The company’s success is a sign that Colombia is changing its image. In the past, Colombia was known for being unsafe, but since the 2016 Peace Accord, it has become a popular place for tourists and people moving from countries like the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.
Colombia is now a key business center in Latin America, with a fast-growing start-up scene. According to a recent report, there are now 2,100 start-ups in Colombia, which is 24 percent more than last year. Maria Peñaranda, who works at KPMG Colombia, says that Colombia is now the second-best place for start-ups in Latin America, after Brazil. She also says that almost 80 percent of these start-ups are still in the early stages, which shows that many people are interested in starting new companies. Rappi’s long-term success has helped inspire other entrepreneurs and has made investors more confident about putting money into Colombian start-ups.
Other Colombian start-ups are also doing well. For example, Yuno is a global payments company, and Erco Energy works with renewable energy. Both companies now make more than ten million dollars and have expanded to other regions. Another successful start-up is Foodology, which creates virtual restaurants. These restaurants cook food in special kitchens called dark kitchens and sell it online. Foodology was founded in Bogota in 2019 and has raised over sixty million dollars. The company employs more than 800 people and is now profitable. Foodology uses advanced software to manage thousands of digital storefronts and is now licensing this software to other companies. Because Colombia is not a very large market, many start-ups, including Foodology, expand to other countries like Mexico and Peru.
However, not all start-ups are finding it easy to succeed. Many are struggling to get investment. In 2019, SoftBank started a fund to invest in Latin American start-ups, which brought a lot of attention to the region. But many of these investments did not work out, and now investors are more cautious. The US stock market has also gone down, and venture capital funding has slowed around the world. This means that Colombian start-ups often have to look for money outside the country. Some good companies have failed because they could not find enough investment to keep growing. Experts say that for the start-up scene to improve, there need to be more local investors, including businesses and families, putting money into technology. If local people invest more, it will show international investors that Colombia is a good place for tech companies.
Some entrepreneurs have been more fortunate. Brynne McNulty Rojas, for example, started a property technology company called Habi in Bogota. Habi helps people buy and sell used homes online and offers services like financing and mortgage brokerage. When Brynne and her co-founder started raising money in 2019, there was a lot of excitement about investing in Latin America. Habi has now become a leader in the region’s tech sector and is valued at over one billion dollars. Brynne says she would like to see more local investors because they can help the company operate better in Colombia. Despite the challenges, she recommends Colombia to other entrepreneurs because of the talented people and the growing market. She feels lucky to be working in Colombia and hopes that more people will invest in the country’s technology sector.
