A talented author from Berkshire is celebrating a significant achievement after the film adaptation of his book about a papal election won four prestigious awards at the Bafta Film Awards. Robert Harris, the author, attended the ceremony on Sunday alongside the cast and crew of the film 'Conclave'. This film, which features renowned actors such as Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, Sergio Castellitto, and Isabella Rossellini, is based on Harris's book that was published in 2016. Directed by German filmmaker Edward Berger, the movie was released last year and has garnered critical acclaim. At the Royal Festival Hall on Sunday, 'Conclave' won several important awards, including best film and best British film. Robert Harris, who resides near Hungerford in West Berkshire, shared that he was in the process of writing another book when he learned about the film's success. He expressed his fascination with the dramatic nature of the ancient rituals of the Catholic Church. Having previously worked as a political journalist, Harris wrote 'Conclave' without any expectations of it being adapted into a film. He humorously noted that authors often feel like they are treated as a 'drunken old uncle' when they attend film adaptations of their work. However, he had a positive experience with the makers of 'Conclave', describing them as 'very nice' and stating that he had a 'terrific' time. 'It's a wonderful feeling because being a writer can be quite a solitary and quiet life,' he told BBC Radio 4's Today program. 'Then, every now and then, you get thrown into the glamorous world of showbiz, and it feels fantastic. The entire experience has been amazing. ' He confidently stated, 'It's a very good film. I can say that without bias. I have had a few adaptations of my work that were not very successful, but this one is genuinely excellent! ' During the ceremony, 'Conclave' also received awards for adapted screenplay and editing. When asked by host Nick Robinson if he would consider writing a book about the Church of England, Harris explained that he is more drawn to the intrigue and processes of the Catholic Church. He remarked, 'The Church of England doesn't quite have the same excitement as the Vatican. Lambeth Palace is a lovely place, but it doesn't compare to the grandeur of St Peter's Basilica. There is something captivating about the ancient rituals of the Catholic Church. ' He elaborated that the Sistine Chapel was specifically built for the election of a pope, creating a unique atmosphere. He likened it to a mystery room reminiscent of Agatha Christie novels.
