The hospital will also be the first in the UK to use new technology that lets surgeons feel the resistance of tissues in real time, which means they can be more precise and careful during surgery.

Robotic surgery has already made a big difference at Royal Stoke. The hospital reports that using robots has increased the number of surgeries they can do by twenty percent and has reduced the average time patients need to stay in the hospital by two days. This saves about three thousand bed days every year, and with the new expansion, they expect to save at least five thousand bed days annually. This is important because it means more patients can be treated, and people can recover at home sooner. Across England, the NHS predicts that by 2035, five hundred thousand operations will use robotic assistance each year, compared to seventy thousand in 2023-24. They also expect that within the next ten years, ninety percent of all keyhole surgeries, like removing organs affected by cancer, will use robots, making robotic surgery the standard for many procedures.

The Denise Coates Foundation has been supporting the hospital for years, with total donations reaching twenty-nine million pounds since 2014. This funding has helped the hospital buy new equipment and improve patient care. In October, Royal Stoke became the first hospital in England to use the Magic Leap surgical system, which allows surgeons to see detailed 3D images of a patient's spine during surgery using special virtual reality goggles. Hospital leaders say these advances are helping Royal Stoke become a centre of excellence for robotic surgery, offering world-class care to local communities. The foundation says supporting projects that make a lasting difference is a key part of their mission.
