The Discovery Museum in Newcastle has launched an exciting new exhibition called 'Things That Go! ' This special display is all about different types of transport and how people have traveled over the years. Museum curators searched through their archives to find unique and interesting objects that have never been shown to the public before. One of the highlights is a blue pedal car from the 1950s, designed for children. It has a white steering wheel, a front bumper, and a boxy shape that was typical of cars from that era. The exhibition also features models of the Shields Ferry and the South Shields trolleybus, both of which played important roles in local transportation history.
The exhibition was created with young families in mind, but there is something for everyone to enjoy. The organizers hope that by showing these fascinating objects, they will inspire the next generation of museum-goers, thinkers, and inventors. Other notable items on display include models of steam locomotives, a Victorian fire engine, and an Armstrong-Whitworth biplane. There is also a beautifully decorated Royal Mail carriage model and a surfboard that belonged to Gabe Davies, a surfing champion from North Tyneside who has competed both in Britain and internationally.
Admission to the exhibition is free, thanks to sponsorship from Stagecoach, Tyne and Wear Metro, and Lumo Travel. One of the fun features is an electric model of a Lumo train that runs continuously around the display. The objects are organized into different sections, such as 'By the Sea,' 'To the Rescue,' 'On the Building Site,' and 'On the Farm. ' For example, the 'To the Rescue' section includes a model of a Victorian fire engine and an extendable ladder on wheels, while the 'On the Building Site' section features a lorry with lifting gear and a crane on caterpillar tracks. Keith Merrin, the Director of North East Museums, said that the new Special Exhibitions Gallery has transformed an old, tired space into a bright and modern area. This allows the Discovery Museum to share more of its collection with visitors, instead of keeping these items hidden away in storage. He believes that 'Things That Go! ' is a fun and engaging way to explore the theme of transport, and that people of all ages will find something to enjoy and learn from in the exhibition.
