Georgie Power, a senior coordinator at a tree-planting charity, says this summer was unlike any she has experienced. There was no rain for more than fifty days, and her team had to work extra hard to keep the trees alive. They watered the trees more often and gave each one fifty to sixty litres of water. This is a lot of work when caring for hundreds of trees. Volunteers were encouraged to help with mulching, which helps keep moisture in the soil and protects the trees. Rosie Fyles, who manages gardens, noticed that many trees started dropping their leaves early, not because it was autumn, but because they could not get enough water. The trees most affected are those commonly found in English gardens. If trees continue to face stress from heat and drought, their lives will be shortened, and more will die.

The mayor of London aims to increase the city's tree canopy by ten percent compared to 2016 levels. However, trees weakened by heat and drought are more vulnerable to pests and diseases. Researchers are now studying which tree species are best suited to survive climate change. The results of this research will be available next spring. Wildfires are also becoming more common, posing another threat to trees. Kate Sheldon, CEO of Trees for Cities, describes the summer as incredibly challenging. She says trees need extra help now and will continue to need it in the future. This puts pressure on funding and resources for charities. People can help by watering young trees, donating water, sponsoring a tree, and spreading the word. Every action helps. The charity is also testing new tree species that are more resilient to hot and dry conditions, such as Italian Alder, Ginko, and European nettle trees. Georgie Power is worried about the future, saying that climate change is now visible in London. She believes everyone must help care for trees in their gardens and community spaces. Adjusting to the new climate is the only option to ensure trees survive.
