Australia has become the first country to ban children under 16 from using major social media platforms like TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat, and Threads. This new law means that anyone under 16 cannot create new accounts, and any accounts they already had have been deactivated. The government says the main reason for this ban is to protect young people from harmful content and the negative effects of spending too much time online. A government study found that almost all kids between 10 and 15 years old used social media, and many of them saw things that could hurt their mental health, such as bullying, violent content, and messages that encourage unhealthy behaviors.

The ban covers ten platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Threads, TikTok, X, YouTube, Reddit, and the streaming sites Kick and Twitch. The government decides which sites to include based on whether their main purpose is to let people interact online, if users can talk to each other, and if they can post things. Some apps, like YouTube Kids and Google Classroom, are not included because they are used differently. Kids can still look at most things online if they do not need an account. Some people think the ban should also cover online games like Roblox and Discord, but those are not included right now.

The law does not punish children or their parents if they break the rule. Instead, the companies that run the social media sites can be fined a lot of money if they do not do enough to keep kids off their platforms. The government says companies must use several ways to check ages, like government IDs, face or voice recognition, or looking at how people use the site to guess their age. They cannot just ask users or parents to say how old they are. Some people worry that these checks might not work well and could block adults by mistake. Others think that teaching kids how to use social media safely would be better than banning them. Some teenagers have tried to get around the ban by making fake accounts or sharing accounts with their parents.

There are also concerns about privacy because checking ages means collecting a lot of personal information. Australia has had problems in the past with data being stolen. The government says the new law has strong rules to protect people's information and that it can only be used for age checks and must be deleted afterward. Social media companies were surprised and unhappy about the ban. They said it would be hard to enforce, could be easy to get around, and might make kids use less safe parts of the internet. Some companies even said they are not really social media. When the ban started, some kids tried to use other apps or VPNs to get around the rules, but that did not last long. Other countries are watching Australia closely and are thinking about making similar rules to protect young people online.
