A new robotic laboratory is being built in Liverpool, and it is expected to change the way scientists research diseases. The lab is getting £20 million in funding, with £10 million coming from the Liverpool City Region Life Sciences Innovation Zone. The main goal of this new facility is to help scientists develop vaccines and medicines faster, and to reduce the need for animal testing. Instead of using animals, the lab will use lab-grown miniature human organs, such as tiny hearts and brains, to test new treatments for infectious diseases.
Professor Giancarlo Biagini, who is the Pro-vice chancellor for research and innovation at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, says that this technology is very exciting. He explains that these mini organs are made from human tissue donated by people, and they can actually beat like real hearts. Professor Biagini believes that using human tissue will give scientists more accurate and reliable data than using animals. He also says that the new lab will help speed up the process of developing new drugs, vaccines, and ways to diagnose diseases. The facility is being supported by the Infection Innovation Consortium, known as iiCON, and is expected to be fully open by 2027.
Professor Janet Hemingway, who helped start iiCON, says that the new lab will also create hundreds of new jobs in technology. She points out that while robots will do a lot of the routine work, people will still be needed to develop and improve the technology. This means that scientists and doctors will have more time to focus on important research, instead of spending time on repetitive tasks. The new lab is expected to make research faster and more effective, and it will help reduce the number of animals used in scientific experiments. This is good news for both science and animal welfare.
