Google has recently introduced an exciting new feature that allows users to search the internet by filming a video. This innovative video search capability enables individuals to point their camera at an object, pose a question about it, and receive relevant search results instantly. Starting from 1700 GMT, users of both Android and iPhone devices around the world can access this feature by enabling 'AI Overviews' in their Google app, although it will initially support only the English language. This development is part of Google's ongoing efforts to transform the way people search online by leveraging artificial intelligence (AI). Just three months ago, OpenAI, the organization behind ChatGPT, announced that it was testing a similar feature that allows users to search by asking questions to its chatbot. Earlier this year, Google began incorporating AI-generated results at the top of certain search queries, but the response was mixed, with some users expressing dissatisfaction over the accuracy of the answers provided. In May, the feature faced criticism for delivering erratic and incorrect responses, including one that suggested using 'non-toxic glue. ' At that time, a Google spokesperson acknowledged that these issues were isolated incidents. Since then, the accuracy of the results has improved, with fewer inaccuracies reported. Furthermore, Google has made additional strides to integrate AI into its search capabilities, including the ability to ask questions about still images using Google Lens. The company noted that this feature has significantly increased the popularity of Lens within its mobile app, prompting them to expand its functionality even further. Google's head of search, Liz Reid, stated that the new video search feature will make it easier for users to inquire about their surroundings. For instance, she illustrated a scenario where a person at an aquarium might want to know why a group of fish is swimming in unison. Instead of having to search for information online and type out a query, the new feature allows users to simply point their camera, record a short video, and ask their question aloud. Google's AI will analyze the video, identify the fish, combine that information with the user's question, and generate relevant search results. Industry analyst Paolo Pescatore described this development as a 'big thing' for Google. He emphasized that AI is becoming increasingly prevalent in various aspects of life, and people tend to connect better with visual content. This latest advancement further illustrates new ways of bringing content to life through search, which is one of the most common activities performed on the internet. Pescatore also highlighted the potential for AI to be truly collaborative and innovative in everyday life, suggesting that we are on the verge of AI becoming more personalized and tailored to our individual usage patterns and habits. In addition to the video search feature, Google has rolled out several other updates. The company claims to have enhanced its shopping results, which will now include reviews and pricing information from various sellers. Additionally, Google is introducing a competitor to the music-identifying app Shazam, which is owned by Apple. This new tool, accessible through Circle to Search on Android devices, will allow users to identify songs playing on a website or in a show they are streaming without leaving the app. These new features from Google come at a time when the company is facing increasing competition in the search market, where it is estimated to hold over 90% of the global market share. This competition includes OpenAI, which revealed in July that it was testing a search feature within ChatGPT. Known as SearchGPT, this feature enables users to search the internet by asking questions to a chatbot, and it is currently being tested by a limited number of users in the United States. OpenAI's valuation surged to $157 billion, thanks to significant investments from high-profile backers, including Microsoft. Google's recent announcements appear to be a strategic response to the growing presence of rival companies, although none have yet posed a serious threat to its substantial dominance in the search industry.
