A new robot has helped a 15-year-old girl named Brooke Hacker walk for the first time in her life. Brooke lives in Swansea, Wales, and has cerebral palsy, a condition that makes it very hard for her to move and walk. Her parents, Andrew and Rebecca, were told that Brooke might never be able to walk. But thanks to a special robot called an exoskeleton, Brooke was able to take 812 steps during a trial at a clinic in Carmarthenshire. Her four-year-old sister, Holly, was able to run alongside her, which made the moment even more special for the family. Brooke's parents said they were extremely proud of her and that seeing her walk was something they never thought would happen.
The exoskeleton is a wearable robot that fits around a child's legs and helps them move. It is black with a green bar around the middle and can be adjusted to fit different children. The robot was created by Trexo Robotics, a company from Canada, and this was the first time it was used in the UK. The exoskeleton costs between £40,000 and £50,000, which is about the same as a mid-sized car. Brooke's family hopes that this technology will become available to more children across the country. They believe that every child should have the chance to use equipment that could change their life. The robot helps children practice walking patterns that are difficult to do with regular therapy.
Brooke has been going to physiotherapy sessions for over a year and was one of the first children to try the robot. The lead physiotherapist at the clinic, Mia Martin Evans, said that Brooke was able to walk 812 steps with the robot, while she would usually only walk about 30 steps in a normal session. Another child, three-year-old Hopcyn, also got to try the exoskeleton. His parents, Carys and Marc, were told that he might never walk, but seeing him take steps with the robot was an overwhelming experience for them. The robot is already being used in countries like the USA, Canada, Australia, and Singapore. The creators of the robot hope that it will be used more widely in the UK in the future. They believe that new technology like this can give hope to many families and help children become more independent.
