These are not ordinary birdhouses but elaborate structures built into the walls of mosques, tombs, and other important buildings. Most of these bird palaces were created between the 16th and 19th centuries, reflecting the Ottomans' respect and compassion for animals. The Ottomans believed that charity was a key part of their faith, and this extended to caring for animals. They built special places for birds to nest safely, showing their kindness and thoughtfulness.

The bird palaces are found all over central Istanbul, often perched under the eaves of historic buildings. Each one has its own unique design, with some looking like miniature versions of the buildings they are attached to. The Ottomans saw birds as symbols of the soul reaching for the heavens, and they often placed birdhouses on the walls of mosques facing Mecca. This way, the sound of birds would blend with the prayers, creating a peaceful atmosphere. The tradition of building birdhouses in official buildings started even before the Ottomans, with the Seljuk Empire. At first, these were simple holes for birds to nest in, but over time, they became more decorative and complex.

During the 18th century, when the Ottoman Empire was prosperous, the bird palaces became even more elaborate. Influenced by European styles like Baroque and Rococo, stonecutters created birdhouses with gabled roofs, cupolas, and intricate railings. These structures were not only beautiful but also practical, encouraging birds to nest in safe places and protecting the buildings from damage. Stonecutters used these bird palaces to showcase their skills, and sometimes they served as models for larger architectural projects.

Istanbul is still home to many bird species, thanks to its location along major migratory routes. Birds like storks, herons, and seagulls can be seen throughout the city. However, many bird palaces are now damaged or hidden due to age, weather, and new construction. Few new bird palaces have been built since the 19th century, as modern ideas about urban wildlife have changed. Despite this, the old bird palaces remain a symbol of the city's tradition of hospitality and its connection to nature. They remind us that cities can be shared spaces for both people and animals, and offer inspiration for how we might care for urban wildlife in the future.
