Hanle is a remote village located in the Ladakh region of northern India, sitting at a high altitude of 5,290 meters above sea level. The landscape around Hanle is barren and rocky, resembling the surface of the Moon. What makes Hanle truly special is its incredibly dark night skies, which allow visitors to see thousands of stars, planets, and even the Milky Way with the naked eye. The village is known for having 270 clear nights each year, making it one of the best places in the world for stargazing.

Over the past few years, Hanle has become a popular destination for travelers who want to experience astronomy up close. Local families have opened homestays, where guests can stay and enjoy traditional Ladakhi food like tingmo bread and thupka noodle soup. The villagers have received training in astronomy and now lead stargazing sessions on rooftops and courtyards, using telescopes to point out constellations, planets, and galaxies. Hanle is also home to one of the world's highest optical telescopes, located in a dome-shaped observatory. Every September, the village hosts the Hanle Star Party, a festival that attracts serious stargazers and astrophotographers from all over India.

Before Hanle became famous for astronomy, it was home to a few nomadic families who moved with their animals. In 1992, scientists from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics discovered that Hanle's clear skies and high altitude made it perfect for observing the stars. They built the Indian Astronomical Observatory, and more people settled in the village. As tourism grew, light pollution became a problem, so the villagers and scientists worked together to create the Hanle Dark Sky Reserve. They installed blackout curtains, used warm bulbs, and turned off lights early to protect the darkness. Today, Hanle is a unique place where ancient traditions and modern science come together, offering visitors a chance to experience the wonders of the cosmos while helping to preserve the village's precious night skies.
