She was driving at a dangerous speed of 65 miles per hour in a 25 miles per hour zone when her vehicle collided with the golf cart carrying the couple, which was being driven by Aric's brother-in-law. Following the crash, a blood test revealed that Komoroski had a blood alcohol level three times over the legal limit. Additionally, she had initially refused to provide breath samples to the police, according to a report from law enforcement. During the court proceedings at Charleston County Courthouse, Komoroski admitted to several charges, including felony DUI resulting in death. She received multiple sentences that will run concurrently. Before her sentencing, she expressed her regret and took full responsibility for her actions. Aric, who suffered a brain injury and broken bones in the crash, also spoke in court. Although he has no memory of the accident itself, he was able to recall his last conversation with Samantha.
