Lego has introduced a new product called Smart Bricks, which are regular-looking Lego blocks filled with technology. The first set to feature Smart Bricks will be a Star Wars set, launching in March. However, not everyone is sure that Smart Bricks are a good idea. Some experts who study how children play worry that adding technology could take away from what makes Lego special. Josh Golin, who leads a group focused on children’s wellbeing, said that traditional Lego bricks are great because they let kids use their imagination. He thinks that children don’t need extra features like lights and sounds to have fun, because they already make up their own stories and sound effects. Professor Andrew Manches from the University of Edinburgh agreed, saying that the best part of Lego is the freedom to create and imagine. Still, he also said it’s interesting to see how Lego is trying to combine physical and digital play, and that the new technology could add something new to the experience.

The Smart Bricks are designed to sense motion, position, and distance. Inside each brick, there are sensors, lights, a sound synthesizer, an accelerometer, and a custom chip that helps it detect movement. These bricks work together with other new products called Smart Minifigures and Smart Tags. When these pieces interact, they can trigger different sounds or lights. For example, a Lego birthday cake can play a happy birthday song when you pretend to blow out the candles, and a Lego helicopter can make whooshing sounds and light up if it crashes. The Smart Bricks use a wireless system to communicate with each other, making play more interactive. Tom Donaldson, who leads Lego’s Creative Play Lab, said that the goal is to make the bricks respond to children’s actions and encourage them to keep playing.

Some experts are excited about the new technology, but they also warn that it’s important to think about privacy and security, especially as more toys use digital features and even artificial intelligence. Professor Manches said that while the technology is exciting, everyone should pay attention to how these toys affect children’s lives. Lego has tried digital experiments before, like apps and video games, and they want to keep finding new ways to make play fun for kids. The company’s leaders say that investing in digital technology is a big part of their plan for the future, and they hope Smart Bricks will help them stay popular with new generations of children.
