The cathedral, which had been rebuilt after being destroyed during World War Two, was a modern and impressive building. Ellington and his orchestra performed his Concert of Sacred Music, and he even composed a new piece called Come Easter just for this occasion. The concert was a huge event, and there was so much demand for tickets that many people were turned away. Some were so disappointed that they wrote letters to the local newspaper, saying it was unfair they could not attend.

This concert was a significant moment in British jazz history. Jazz had become more popular in Britain since the late 1950s, with new clubs opening and more people interested in the music. Having a world-famous musician like Duke Ellington perform in Coventry was a big deal. It was also the only time during his 1966 British tour that he played his sacred music, making the event even more unique. The cathedral was not a typical place for a jazz concert, which made the night even more memorable. The concert was filmed for television, but the recording was lost for over fifty years.

Dr Nicolas Pillai, a researcher, discovered the lost film in 2017 while working at Birmingham City University. He was thrilled to find it, as it captured an important moment in both Ellington's career and the history of Coventry Cathedral. The film was restored and released on DVD, allowing more people to experience the concert. The event is remembered as a landmark in British jazz, showing how music can bring people together in new and unexpected places. Duke Ellington's performance at Coventry Cathedral remains a powerful example of how art and faith can combine to create something truly special.
