Helen Davies, a 54-year-old mother from Mevagissey in Cornwall, has found a new sense of purpose after rediscovering her love for music. For nearly three decades, Helen put her passion for music aside, focusing on raising her three children and managing her household. She originally stopped playing music after a bike accident and struggled with stage fright, which made it difficult for her to perform. Helen said, 'I feel like I have some purpose again. I'm Helen - I'm not just someone's mum or a housewife. ' Joining the band Hell Up has brought excitement and joy back into her life, making her feel like a teenager again.

Helen first got into music at the age of 20, but her journey was interrupted by her accident and the responsibilities of family life. She explained, 'It took 30 years for me to be able to get that love back. It's really given me something back that was missing. ' By September 2023, all of Helen's children had moved out, giving her more time to focus on herself. She said that rediscovering music has provided her with fun and a renewed sense of identity. Helen believes that people do not have to act their age and that it's important to reconnect with who you are. She said, 'I feel like a teenager again, there is no part of me that feels like a 54-year-old woman. We don't have to grow up. '

Lena Gillan, another mother from Penzance, has also found purpose through music. Lena runs her own business and is the mother of a 13-year-old. She sings in a punk band called Piecework, which formed in May 2025. Lena said that as her child grew older, she was able to reclaim some time for herself. She shared, 'Most of the time women just turn invisible. You want to do something that matters to you. ' Being part of a band has given Lena a sense of fulfillment and helped her feel seen and valued.

Both Helen and Lena's stories show that it's never too late to pursue your passions and find joy in life. They hope to inspire other women to do something meaningful for themselves, even after years of focusing on family and work. Music has helped them feel young, energetic, and purposeful, and they encourage others to find what makes them happy and embrace it.
