As the weather gets warmer, many pet owners worry about how to keep their dogs and cats safe from the heat. Dogs, in particular, can struggle to cool themselves down, and even when it does not feel very hot to us, they can get heat injuries. Some breeds, like bulldogs and pugs, are especially at risk because of their short noses, which make it hard for them to breathe out heat. Other dogs with thick fur, like huskies, can also get hot, but their double coats can actually help keep them cool if they are brushed and not matted.

Veterinarians say that heat injuries in dogs often happen in late spring or early summer. This is because dogs may not be as fit after winter, and owners are excited to take them on longer walks as the weather improves. It is important to start with shorter walks and let your dog get used to the warmer temperatures. Try to walk your dog early in the morning or in the evening, when it is cooler. Avoid the middle of the day, when the sun is strongest. Always bring water for your dog and look for shady spots to rest. Hot pavement can burn your dog's paws, so check the ground with your hand before walking. If it is too hot for you, it is too hot for your dog. Never leave your pet in a car, even for a short time, because the temperature inside can rise quickly and become dangerous.

Some dogs may benefit from a haircut in the summer, but always ask your vet before shaving your dog, especially if they have a double coat. Regular brushing helps keep their fur from getting matted and allows air to flow through, which helps them stay cool. Overweight pets are more likely to get too hot, so keeping your pet at a healthy weight is important. Watch for signs of overheating, like heavy panting, noisy breathing, or acting tired and weak. If you notice these signs, move your pet to a cool place, give them water, and use cool (not cold) water to help them cool down. If your pet does not get better quickly, take them to the vet. Cats are usually good at avoiding the heat, but they can get trapped in hot places like sunrooms or cars, so always check before closing doors. By being careful and watching for signs of heat stress, you can help your pets enjoy the summer safely.
