Alexandra Burch, a 19-year-old designer from Witney, is making waves in the fashion world by focusing on sustainability and local heritage. She is one of eight finalists in the Redress Design Award, an international competition that encourages young designers to create new clothing from textile waste. Alexandra's collection, called Cotswold Remnants, is a tribute to her hometown and is made entirely from materials and offcuts salvaged from the Cotswold Woollen Weavers, a mill that has recently closed. Her designs include jackets, skirts, and tops, all crafted from British wool that is either undyed or naturally dyed. Alexandra is excited to represent her community and showcase her work on a global stage. She was flown to Hong Kong for the grand final fashion show, where she will compete against designers from Austria, Germany, Hong Kong, and mainland China. Alexandra says she is looking forward to meeting the other finalists and learning from their experiences. She will also be fitting her clothes on models for the runway show, which is a new and exciting challenge for her. Alexandra's inspiration comes from traditional farmer wear and tweed jackets commonly seen in her local area. She wanted to create something that reflects her roots while also addressing the issue of waste in the fashion industry. She believes that waste is not something that has to happen; instead, it is a choice made during the design process. Alexandra argues that sustainability should be considered from the very beginning of designing clothes, not just added at the end. She thinks that true sustainability means valuing what already exists and designing clothes that are durable and long-lasting. The fashion industry produces a huge amount of waste every year, with 92 million tonnes of textile waste generated globally. This is equal to a garbage truck full of clothing being thrown away or burned every second. Alexandra feels that the industry is moving too fast and that fast fashion brands need to be held responsible for their impact on the environment. She hopes that her work will inspire others to think differently about fashion and support designers who are committed to sustainability. Alexandra is also a student at Kingston University, where she is learning more about fashion design and how to make a positive impact.
