Ellie Brown, a fashion student from Manchester, had her life changed in 2021 when she broke her ankle. While recovering, she realized that many everyday clothes were not designed for people with disabilities or injuries. Buttons, zippers, and tight fits made getting dressed a real challenge. This experience opened her eyes to the difficulties that people with disabilities face every day when it comes to fashion. Before her injury, Ellie admits she was naive about what accessibility in clothing really meant. She thought it was just about comfort, but soon learned it was much more.
Inspired by her own struggles, Ellie decided to create a new clothing brand called Recondition. The goal of Recondition is to make stylish clothes that are also easy to wear for people with different needs. Ellie works closely with people who have disabilities to design these clothes. They make small but important changes, like replacing buttons with poppers, adding straps to help lift legs, and putting pockets in easy-to-reach places. Ellie says these changes are not complicated, but they make a big difference. She believes that fashion should be for everyone, and that style and function can go hand in hand.
Julie Blagbrough, who became a wheelchair user seven years ago, is part of the Recondition design group. She remembers how hard it was to find fashionable clothes that worked for her. Most of the time, she had to wear jogging bottoms or pyjamas because they were easy to put on. She felt like she lost her identity. Now, with Recondition, Julie can wear jeans that are both trendy and practical. The jeans have features like front pockets, straps, and hooks that make getting dressed much easier. Julie says she feels happy and confident again. Another fan of Recondition is Lucy Smith-Butler, a model and fashion blogger from Rochdale. Lucy has a stoma bag due to a health condition. She was worried about how she would look, but now she sees her stoma bag as just another accessory. Recondition makes covers for stoma bags, so people can express their style. Lucy says that having a glittery or frilly stoma bag shows that people with health needs are still fashionable. Paige Dease, another customer, says Recondition allows her to "rock her jeans" and feel like herself. Ellie and her team are proud to help people feel included and stylish, no matter their needs.
