Ilaiyaraaja is one of India's most celebrated music composers, known for his incredible talent and unique style. He changed the sound of Tamil film music with his work on the movie Annakili in 1976, and since then, he has become one of the most influential composers in the country.

Before Ilaiyaraaja, most film music in India was based on classical Indian music, and Western music was not used much. Ilaiyaraaja changed this by mixing Indian folk music, Carnatic ragas, and Western classical music. He learned about Western music after moving to Chennai, where he studied under Dhanraj Master and became skilled at playing the guitar and piano. He was inspired by famous Western composers like Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, and Schubert. Ilaiyaraaja's early life was not easy. He was born in a poor family in a small village in Tamil Nadu. After his father died, his mother worked hard to support the family. Ilaiyaraaja and his brothers learned music from their older brother, who performed at political events. They traveled to different villages, learning about folk and rural music traditions.

Ilaiyaraaja's big break came when he was asked to show his talent for the movie Annakili. He impressed everyone by using a wooden table as a drum and singing. After that, he became very popular and composed music for many hit movies in different languages. His songs often mixed different styles, making them sound fresh and exciting. In the late 1970s and 1980s, new technology like cassette tapes made it easier for people to listen to music at home, and Ilaiyaraaja's songs became even more popular. He was known for understanding the emotions of a film and creating music that matched those feelings. Some of his most famous songs, like Rakkamma Kaiya Thattu from Thalapathi, are still loved today. Ilaiyaraaja also broke social barriers in the music world, showing that talent can come from anywhere. He continues to compose music, perform concerts, and inspire new generations of musicians.
