Basel Abou Hamrah, who resettled in Canada with his family, expressed his worries about returning to Syria. He is particularly concerned about the safety of LGBTQ individuals under the new government, which has raised questions about the future of freedoms in the country. While some refugees are excited about the possibility of returning home, they are also cautious. Israa El Issa, a mother of four who fled Aleppo, shared her feelings of estrangement from her family. She had plans to continue her studies in Canada to become a nurse, but now she is considering returning to Syria to be with her loved ones. Israa believes that despite the challenges, Syria will always be her home.
