Rick Wakeman, a celebrated rock pianist and pioneer of progressive rock, has been honored with a special set of stamps issued by the Isle of Man Post Office. Wakeman, who lived on the Isle of Man for 14 years, expressed that he was 'very overwhelmed and very proud' to see his musical legacy celebrated in this unique way. The stamps feature fantasy landscapes created by artist Roger Dean, whose artwork has graced the covers of many of Wakeman's solo albums and his work with the band Yes. These images include surreal scenes with floating islands, dramatic cliffs, and fantastical creatures, each set against elaborate and colorful stages. Wakeman said that Dean's artwork has always felt like a natural extension of his music, and seeing their worlds combined on stamps is both surreal and wonderful.

The stamp collection consists of six designs, five in vibrant colors and one in black and white. The project was a collaboration between Wakeman, Dean, and the Isle of Man Post Office. Wakeman is known for his innovative contributions to progressive rock and has also played with legendary artists such as David Bowie and Elton John. He first met Roger Dean in 1971 during the recording of the Yes album 'Fragile,' and their friendship has lasted ever since. Wakeman described how the band immediately felt that Dean's art was like an artistic version of their music, making Dean almost like a sixth member of the group. Dean has also created artwork for Wakeman's solo projects, and Wakeman admires his unique style.

Wakeman reflected on the importance of album cover art, especially now that vinyl records are making a comeback. He believes that music is something to listen to and touch, and a great album cover is an essential part of the experience. Wakeman recalled visiting record shops and being captivated by album covers, sometimes buying records just because the cover was so striking. He felt that if the cover was impressive, the music inside must be as well. Born in Middlesex, Wakeman moved to the Isle of Man in 1987 and recorded several albums at his home studio, including one celebrating local historical landmarks with the Manx National Heritage. He still holds the Isle of Man in high regard and often promotes its beauty and uniqueness. Looking ahead to his upcoming UK tour, 'The Return Of The Caped Crusader Part 2,' Wakeman admitted that touring is hard work, especially as he deals with health issues like arthritis. Despite the challenges, he remains passionate about performing and feels blessed to play music every day.
