In Bristol city center, a vibrant mural called 'Our Common Ground' is already in need of repairs just a month after it was first revealed to the public. The mural, which celebrates African heritage and the local communities in Bristol, was created by artist Oisín Davis-Lyons and a team of painters. It took them three weeks to complete the artwork, which is as large as two tennis courts. The mural was commissioned by Bristol City Council and the Bristol City Centre Business Improvement District to help improve the look of Centre Promenade. However, people have started to notice that some sections of the mural have been damaged, with visible scuff marks and black tire tracks marring the colorful design.
Bristol City Council has announced that maintenance work is being planned to repair the damaged areas. The repairs will be paid for using the original project funding, so there will be no extra cost to the city. A council spokesperson explained that they expect some wear and tear on the mural, and they have an ongoing maintenance plan to keep it looking good. Councillor Andrew Brown said that the plan includes regular cleaning and the installation of 18 freestanding planters along the edge of the mural. These planters are meant to prevent vehicles from driving over the artwork and causing further damage. The council also plans to carry out yearly inspections to assess the condition of the mural as part of their annual maintenance for the area.
The mural was painted using road line marking paint on a tarmac surface, which is supposed to be a durable material for areas with lots of foot traffic. Despite this, some students who pass by the mural every day have noticed the damage. Minna Fox, a student, said that the scuff marks take away from the overall impact of the piece and that maintaining it all the time would probably be difficult. Another student, Lucia Chamberlain-Medd, said she had noticed the marks and thought the mural was not looking as good as it did when it was first unveiled. The council hopes that with regular cleaning and the addition of planters, the mural will remain a bright and attractive feature in the city center for everyone to enjoy.
