Belfast has been chosen to host the world-famous Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, the All-Ireland Fleadh, for two years in a row, in 2026 and 2027. This is a huge event for the city, as the Fleadh is the largest festival of Irish music and dance in the world. Every August, the festival lasts for a week and attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors. In the past, up to 600,000 people have come to the host city to enjoy the music, dancing, and celebrations. The festival was already set to take place in Belfast in 2026, from August 2 to August 9, and now it has been confirmed that Belfast will also host it again in 2027. This makes Belfast the first city in Northern Ireland to host the Fleadh twice.

The announcement was made by Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, the group that organizes the festival. Niall McClean from Ards CCÉ and Darren Leighton from the Belfast Bands Forum said they were thrilled that the Fleadh would return to Belfast. They believe it is a great honor for the city and a chance to show off Belfast’s musical talent and welcoming spirit. The organizers also shared more details about the 2026 festival. Sharon Shannon and her Big Band will be the main act on the opening night. Other performers include the award-winning group Goitse, the Blackwater Ceili Band, and the Belfast group McPeake. There will also be performances by school choirs and groups from different communities, showing the city’s diversity.

Belfast’s deputy lord mayor, Paul Doherty, said hosting the Fleadh again is a tremendous honor and proves Belfast’s reputation as a city of music. He said the festival will help local businesses, hotels, and restaurants, and bring a big boost to the city’s economy. Doherty also said that the two-year event will give Belfast a chance to show its rich culture and history to visitors from all over the world. The director-general of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, Dr Labhrás Ó Murchú, said the decision to return to Belfast shows how strong the partnership is between the festival and the city. He said Belfast’s music venues, like the Waterfront and Ulster Hall, will help make the festival even more special.

The Fleadh Cheoil is an annual festival and competition that celebrates Irish music, dance, and language. It was started in 1951 by musicians who wanted to keep Irish traditions alive. Every year, there are smaller festivals in different parts of Ireland, but the biggest one is Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann. Sometimes, similar festivals are held in other countries, where they are called Féilte. In 2013, the Fleadh was held in Derry and brought 400,000 people and 20,000 performers to the city.
