Mayor Khan wrote a letter to Amodei, expressing his concern about the US government's actions. He said it seemed like the government was trying to punish Anthropic for keeping ethical rules in place for their AI. Anthropic has said they plan to fight the Pentagon's decision in court. The mayor's office also confirmed that they have been in talks with senior leaders at Anthropic this week.

The conflict started when Amodei spoke with US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. Amodei was worried about the possibility of the military using Anthropic's AI for things like mass surveillance or making decisions about military targets without human control. The Pentagon responded by saying that the military only wants to use technology for legal reasons and that they do not plan to use it in ways that would break the law. Despite this, President Trump announced last week that he would order all federal agencies to stop using Anthropic's technology. In his letter, Mayor Khan praised Amodei for standing firm under pressure and said he would like to discuss how London could help Anthropic grow. He suggested that London could be an important place for Anthropic's future work.

As the relationship between Anthropic and the US government becomes more strained, London's offer could give the company a new opportunity. Anthropic had been negotiating with the Department of Defense, but those talks have now ended. The Pentagon's decision to call Anthropic a supply chain risk is the first time this has happened to a US company. This means the government does not think Anthropic is secure enough for their use.
