Jersey is a small island that wants to grow its economy, but it faces a challenge: there are not enough people to fill all the jobs. Tony Moretta, the CEO of Digital Jersey, believes that artificial intelligence, or AI, could be the solution. AI is a type of technology that allows computers to do tasks that usually require human intelligence, like answering questions or organizing information. At the Annual Review for Digital Jersey, experts discussed how AI could be used in the workplace and how it might help Jersey's businesses expand without needing more people to move to the island.
Tony Moretta explained that Jersey has a hard time finding enough workers, especially in important industries like financial services. He said, 'It's a challenge to recruit people in Jersey like lots of places these days... we have to move to the next step which is automating tasks using AI agents. ' He believes that by using AI, Jersey can have 'synthetic workers'—computer programs that can do many jobs quickly and efficiently. This would allow Jersey to increase its economic output without putting pressure on housing and other resources. Tony said, 'We could use AI to effectively have what's often known in the industry as synthetic workers. ' He also pointed out that hiring thousands more people for jobs is not possible because it would make it hard to find enough homes and could change the island too much.
Some people worry that AI will take away jobs from humans, but Tony disagrees. He thinks that if people learn new skills and adapt to new technology, they will still have important roles. He said, 'I think we will lose jobs if we don't have a skilled workforce, if employers do not offer their workers the opportunity to upskill, to reskill, if we don't give school leavers the skills they need in the new business roles that are going to come up. ' Tony believes that humans will still need to work with AI, but they must know how to use it. He said, 'You still need individuals working with AI, you still need humans in the loop, but we have to make sure those humans have the skills to use AI. '
Tony also talked about the risks and opportunities of AI. He said, 'So the opportunity is for us to improve our productivity, to improve our competitiveness, especially in areas like financial services, and to really grow the amount of business we can take on without growing the population. ' But he warned that if Jersey does not use AI and does not teach people how to use it, the island could fall behind other places. 'If we don't embrace the technology, if we do not make sure we have the skills to use the technology offered by AI, then the threat is that we could become less competitive compared to other jurisdictions. We could lose business and we could lose jobs. '
Not everyone in Jersey feels the same way about AI. Elizabeth Bosch, a photographer, said she does not use AI to create images, but she thinks it could be helpful if you know what you want it to do. She is not worried about AI taking her job because she believes her work is unique. However, she is concerned about copyright issues, which means making sure her photos are not copied without her permission. Elizabeth said, 'I've even seen videos that are AI that look real so I feel very sorry for the older generation. I mean, how do you tell? It's quite scary. '
Harry Brown, another resident, does not like using AI. He thinks people are too dependent on it and that it makes people lazy. He said, 'People rely on it too much to do pretty much everything now - booking holidays, or crazy things like writing emails. ' He also mentioned that he sees a lot of AI-generated content online, which he finds unsettling.
Jersey is at a crossroads. The island must decide how to use AI in a way that helps businesses grow while also making sure people have the skills they need for the future. Some people are excited about the possibilities, while others are worried about the changes AI might bring. But everyone agrees that learning about AI and preparing for the future is important for Jersey's success.
