The Royal Observatory in Greenwich, one of the oldest scientific institutions in the United Kingdom, has issued a warning about the growing use of artificial intelligence tools that provide instant answers to questions and complex problems. According to Paddy Rodgers, the director of the Royal Museums Greenwich group, relying too much on AI for quick answers could make people less intelligent over time. He believes that the Observatory’s long history of research shows how important human curiosity and the habit of asking questions are for gaining knowledge and making new discoveries. Rodgers explained that if we depend only on AI, we might lose the skills of questioning and evaluating information, which are necessary for expertise and innovation.

The Royal Observatory is currently undergoing a transformation through a project called First Light. This project aims to celebrate the passion and curiosity of astronomers over the past 350 years and to share their discoveries with the public. Rodgers told the BBC that many of the Observatory’s most important discoveries would not have happened without both technological innovation and the willingness of people to ask questions and search for answers themselves. He pointed out that early astronomers collected a huge amount of data about the stars and planets, often doing things that a machine would not do because they seemed unnecessary at the time. However, this extra work turned out to be very valuable, as it helped scientists many years later to solve new problems and verify new ideas.

Today, AI is being used to help scientists make new discoveries. For example, Sir Demis Hassabis, a computer scientist and the head of Google’s AI company DeepMind, used AI to predict the structures of almost all known proteins, which are the building blocks of life. He created a tool called AlphaFold2, which has been called revolutionary. Some experts, like LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, say that AI can be used as a tool to challenge our ideas and help us think more deeply. Teachers and students have also found that AI can help them focus on the most important parts of learning and improve their skills, as long as they use it responsibly. However, if people let AI do all the thinking for them, they might not develop their own problem-solving abilities.

Generative AI tools, which can create text, images, videos, or audio in response to complex prompts, are being developed very quickly. Chatbots have become more advanced, and image generators can now make very realistic pictures. While these tools are praised for their abilities, there are also concerns about their limitations and the risks of relying on them too much. Rodgers pointed out that with older online tools like Wikipedia, people could check the sources of information and decide if it was reliable. With AI, important details can be left out, making it harder to know if the information is trustworthy. Dr Anuschka Schmitt, an assistant professor at the London School of Economics, said that overreliance on technology is not new, but AI makes it much easier for people to avoid thinking for themselves. Studies have shown that using AI too much can hurt our memory and learning.

Despite these concerns, AI tools that give us information without much effort are becoming more common. For example, Google now uses AI Overviews at the top of search results, and similar features are appearing on social media platforms like TikTok and X. The Royal Observatory and other experts are encouraging people to keep asking questions and to use AI as a tool, not a replacement for their own thinking. They believe that curiosity and the habit of searching for answers are still very important for learning and discovery.
