Two first-year students from the University of Worcester are about to take a big step in their dance careers. Maisey Tromans, who is 19 and from Dudley, and Ruby Brown, who is 18 and from Solihull, have both been given their first professional dance jobs. They are both studying for a degree in dance and performance. The two students will work together to co-produce and perform a duet called Echo in the Shadows at the Swan Theatre in Worcester this February.
The opportunity came when the theatre invited students to create a dance piece that would reflect the history of dance at the venue. Maisey and Ruby's idea was chosen, and the theatre decided to commission their work. Maisey, who began dancing at the age of three, said she was still shocked but extremely happy about being selected. She believes this is a huge step toward her goal of becoming a choreographer. Maisey previously studied performing arts at Birmingham Ormiston Academy and has been part of the KLM School of Dance in Dudley for four years. She started there as a student and is now a qualified teacher. In 2024, she was also one of 100 dancers chosen for the English Youth Ballet's production of Giselle. Maisey says that seeing her ideas come to life through other dancers is one of the best feelings.
Ruby started dancing when she was eight years old and says her strengths are in lyrical and contemporary dance. She feels very happy to have been commissioned for this piece, calling it a wonderful opportunity. Ruby wants to become a dance teacher in the future, so learning how to create choreography is important for her career. She says that being chosen for this project has really boosted her confidence and motivation to keep working hard.
Dr Paul Golz, a senior lecturer for dance and performance at the university, said that opportunities like this are rare and highly competitive. He is very proud of Maisey and Ruby for achieving this commission so early in their studies. He believes their success is a testament to their creativity, hard work, and professionalism. The university and the Swan Theatre are both excited to see their students succeed and hope this will inspire other young dancers. This experience will be a valuable part of Maisey and Ruby's journey as they continue to grow as artists and performers.
